What's your ikigai: your reason for being?

Do you sometimes feel like something is missing in your life? That uncomfortable feeling that you're not living up to your full potential, or that your days could be filled with more meaning? If yes, maybe finding your ikigai could help!

What is ikigai you ask? Well, it is a lovely Japanese concept that translates to "reason for being". It's basically the intersection of what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for.

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, losing sight of what truly makes us happy and what truly matters to us. I mean, surely I'm not the only one who's been known to make a mountain out of a molehill or lost sleep over something miniscule when it comes to the bigger picture?

Finding your ikigai can help you find that sweet spot—where passion, mission, vocation, and profession align. It's absolutely not just about having a job; it’s about living a life that feels fulfilling and purposeful.

Studies show that having a sense of purpose can lead to a longer, healthier, and happier life. In its birthplace, Japan, the concept of ikigai is considered one of the reasons behind the country’s high life expectancy and overall wellbeing.

How to find your ikigai

So let’s have a look at how you can find your ikigai and start living a more fulfilling life.

  1. Reflect on what you love. Start by making a list of activities that make you lose track of time. What are the things you do that make you feel alive and vibrant? For me, this includes cooking; making something delicious with my hands and being able to share it with others. Maybe for you, it's writing, painting, solving complex problems, or helping others. Whatever it is, jot it down.

  2. Identify your strengths. Next, think about what you’re good at. This can sometimes be tricky because we often downplay our own abilities. Ask friends, family, or colleagues for their input. What do people come to you for? What skills have you developed over the years? Remember, your strengths don’t have to be world-changing; they just need to be things you do well.

  3. Consider what the world needs. This is where your passions and strengths intersect with the greater good. Think about the issues or causes that resonate with you. Where do you see a need that your skills and passions can fill? This might be in your local community, your professional field, or even on a global scale.

  4. Find your economic model. And last but not least, explore how you can be paid for what you love and what you’re good at. This doesn’t mean you have to quit your day job right away. It might start as a side hustle or a volunteer opportunity that eventually grows. The key is to find a way to integrate your ikigai into your life so that you’re not just working for a paycheck, but also for personal fulfillment.

Embracing ikigai in daily life

Once you have a sense of your ikigai, the next step is to bring it into your daily life. Don't worry, this really doesn’t require a complete life overhaul. Just small, consistent changes can make a big difference. Try these on for size:

  • Set intentional goals. Align your goals with your ikigai. This might mean setting aside time each day to work on a passion project or seeking out new opportunities that resonate with your sense of purpose.

  • Practice mindfulness. Stay present and connected to your purpose. When you’re engaged in activities related to your ikigai, be fully present. Enjoy the process and the journey, not just the end result.

  • Create a supportive environment. Surround yourself with people who support and encourage your pursuit of ikigai. Join communities or groups that share your interests and values.

  • Stay flexible. Your ikigai might evolve over time as you grow and change. Stay open to new experiences and be willing to adjust your path as needed.
